The short version
- The guide pages use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages help people.
- The map remembers your progress in your own browser. It is never sent anywhere.
- If you email me, I use your address only to reply.
- Nothing is sold, and there is no advertising tracking.
Google Analytics
The home, map and guide pages load Google Analytics 4 from Google. (This page and the contact and legal pages don't.) It sets cookies named _ga and _ga_… to tell repeat visits apart, and records which pages are viewed, the site you came from, your rough location (country or city), and your device, browser and screen size. Google says Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.
I only see totals and charts, not individual people. The data is kept for no longer than 14 months. Google handles it under Google's privacy policy.
To opt out, use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on or any content blocker. The site works the same without it.
Stored in your browser
The map saves which markers you've marked as found, which map layers you have turned on, and which animals you've ticked off. It keeps them in your browser's local storage under names starting with oth-. They never leave your device. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes them.
Other services the pages load
- Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web server it sees your IP address and request details, and uses them to deliver pages and block attacks. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts serves the site's font, so your browser contacts Google's servers, which see your IP address.
- cdnjs (run by Cloudflare) serves the map library on the map page.
- Links to Steam and Funselektor load nothing until you click them.
Mail to contact@overthehill.app is forwarded by Cloudflare to my personal inbox. I use your address and what you write only to reply, never share it, and delete it if you ask.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask what I hold about you, ask me to delete it, or object to how it's used. Email contact@overthehill.app. In practice the only personal data I hold is email you sent. Analytics data isn't linked to your name, so I can't look up one visitor, but the opt-out above stops it from being collected.
Children
The site isn't aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect anything from them.
