A giant stone hand in the red desert of over the hill

The story in short

Read in order, the dreams follow his life. He grows up on a farm with his dad and is given a stopwatch. His brother leaves to race, and he is left delivering milk in the van, timing the run from the stone bridge to the railroad crossing and promising not to race. Then he leaves too, stuck over the hill until he finds what he is looking for.

He learns to race, starts winning and turns proud, until a hairpin teaches him that every straight ends in a corner. After the Grand Prix he keeps asking What do I do now?, wonders in the middle of a race whether he is over the hill, and stays in the pits. Later he coaches the son of a woman he once loved, and the boy becomes champion. His dad dies before he gets back home.

In the last dreams he is old. He fixes up an old wreck, can't remember where the farm was, and his stopwatch stops working. The final dream heads beyond the mountains, beyond the swamps, over the hill.

Talking to the Mechanic

First meeting

Howdy!

I can feel our souls bonding already.

Umm...

What can I do for you?

Later visits

Hi there!

Nature's my temple, bro. Earth's energy, you feel it?

What can I do for you?

Opening

Hello my child...

You are here to go exploring off-road.

You will fall, roll over, sink, and slip. At times, moving forward will take great effort.

Offroading was accidentally invented by a farmer...

who reached the end of the road...

and decided to keep going.

It began with simple machines built for farms and rough roads...

and became a way to explore the world.

Curiosity will guide you...

and patience will get you there.

Now go forth and remember: trees are your friends...
