over the hill vehicles

All 21 over the hill vehicles, what they're built for and how to get them. You start with three; every other one is the prize for a challenge trail. Every vehicle can take all 16 upgrades.

Over the hill vehicle classes

Mass, winch, steering and engine come from the vehicle's class, so every vehicle in a class drives the same on these numbers. Engine values are stock / Engine Stage 2 / Engine Stage 3. Tyres, suspension and size are set per vehicle.

The Protector

The Protector

Starting vehicle

Advancements in garden shed technology eventually trickled down to The Protector, bringing coil springs, improved upholstery and a little more comfort. Farmers had long complained that stopping for tea was hurting productivity, so the factory increased onboard hot water-making capacity accordingly.

The Ding

The Ding

The Ding was a product of the great ruler shortage of 1960, with new presses stamping straight body panels quickly enough to send them just about everywhere. From transporting tofu in Japan to firewood in the Alps, an icon was created.

The Trailrat

The Trailrat began with a simple request: replace the horse. The engineers responded with removable body panels, four-wheel drive and an engine made by essentially chopping a larger one in half. Somehow, all of this worked.

The Trail Burner

The Trail Burner

Finish the challenge trail Windy Joe Trail in Emerald Lake. Also pays 25 pebbles.

Someone took a full-size pickup, shortened it dramatically, moved the cargo area inside and made most of the roof removable. The result left The Trail Burner with plenty of room for camping gear, a large thermos and several days' worth of sandwiches.

The Burro

Finish the challenge trail Hermit Trail in Emerald Lake. Also pays 40 pebbles.

The Brick

Finish the challenge trail Bridal Veil Falls Climb in Gimli Ridge. Also pays 25 pebbles.

When it came time to update The Ding, the engineers were given two instructions: make it more comfortable and do not make it worse. The Brick gained a curved windshield, which caused considerable excitement at the factory, along with a little more room and some nicer seats. Underneath, it remained stubbornly committed to being a brick.

The Blast Wagon

Finish the challenge trail Windcall Gorge Trail in Gimli Ridge. Also pays 25 pebbles.

The Polyana

Finish the challenge trail Elvis Rim Trail in Gimli Ridge. Also pays 40 pebbles.

The Polyana developed a habit of showing up where cars weren't supposed to be. One spent over a decade working in Antarctica, while its longer-legged relatives reached Everest Base Camp and the North Pole. Apparently nobody told them where the road ended.

The Bull v1

Finish the challenge trail Blanshard Ridge Trail in Asgard Mountain. Also pays 25 pebbles.

Inside the factory, The Bull v1 was known simply as G.O.A.T. for its ability to go over any terrain. Apparently that wasn't enough, so the accessory catalogue offered everything from winches and snowploughs to radios and powered equipment, allowing owners to turn The Bull v1 into almost anything except a normal car.

Packing a lot of people and equipment into a small footprint meant putting the cab directly over the front wheels. Das Wombat

Finish the challenge trail El Kalaa North Ascent in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert. Also pays 25 pebbles.

The Tinny

Finish the challenge trail Ukhtayn Route in Aurès Mountains. Also pays 25 pebbles.

With steel difficult to obtain, The Tinny used lightweight aluminium for its early panels, which were kept so flat and simple they could largely be folded by hand. Interestingly, they were built in the same factory that also built garden sheds. This explains both its appearance and complete disregard for aerodynamics.

Roamer

Roamer

Finish the challenge trail Kalaa Ulya Track in Aurès Mountains. Also pays 25 pebbles.

The Roamer brought more room and a boxier idea of adventure. Its brochure proudly called it aerodynamic, despite a drag coefficient of 0.43, this was technically true in the same way that a brick is more aerodynamic if you round the corners. It later became an unlikely movie star, carrying tourists through a slightly mismanaged dinosaur park.

A mysterious surplus of glass in America gave The Cumbre 21% more of it than its predecessor, plus large windows and a radio antenna hidden in the windshield. Drivers could see more of the mountains while listening to the weather report telling them not to go there, assuming the antenna picked it up. An auxiliary fuel tank let them get lost considerably farther from home.

Das Lynx

Finish the challenge trail Mahrouqa West Track in Aurès Mountains. Also pays 40 pebbles.

Das Lynx was assembled using an unusual collection of parts that already existed on other cars, including a low first gear for crawling. A few were later sent racing through the desert and did so well that their four-wheel-drive system quietly inspired The Hammer.

Common questions

How many vehicles are in over the hill?

21. You start with The Protector and also own The Ding and The Trailrat. The other 18 are each the reward for one challenge trail. No vehicle is sold for pebbles.

How do I unlock new vehicles?

Finish challenge trails. 18 of the 23 trails give a vehicle the first time you complete them, and some also pay pebbles. The table above names the trail for each vehicle and links to it on the map.

Which vehicle is the fastest or strongest?

Speed, torque, weight, winch strength and steering come from the vehicle class. Wagon vehicles have the highest top speed (36 km/h with Engine Stage 3). Expedition vehicles have the most torque (256 Nm) and weigh 3,200 kg. Trail vehicles are the lightest at 1,600 kg and steer the tightest at 38°.

How do distance liveries unlock?

Free liveries can be used from the start. Distance liveries unlock every 50 km, up to 300 km, and each vehicle counts its own distance, so you unlock them by driving that vehicle.

Do upgrades carry over to other vehicles?

No. Upgrades are bought for one vehicle, so a new vehicle starts from stock.
