How wildlife spawns
- Every spawn point belongs to one species. An animal only appears when you drive near its spawn point, and fades out once you leave.
- Day is 05:00–20:00 and night is 20:00–05:00, game time. A day animal won't spawn at night.
- Wet weather is dense fog, filtered fog, heavy precipitation, light precipitation, receding storm. Only the animals marked Yes under Wet spawn in it.
- No animal spawns in dust storm, electric fog, hail storm, snow storm, thunder storm.
- Everything else counts as dry, and every animal can spawn in it. That includes approaching storm, distant storm, imminent storm, sand storm, storm eye.
- Time and weather only matter at the moment an animal spawns. One that is already out stays put if night falls or rain starts.
- An animal that has fled won't come back to its spot until you drive away and return.
- Habitat is how the game describes the animal. Spawn points are fixed, so the map is the place to look.

Where to photograph the most animals
- Canada, 16 species: Emerald Lake has 12, Gimli Ridge 11 and Asgard Mountain 9. No single area has them all: 1 only in Emerald Lake and 1 only in Gimli Ridge.
- Algeria, 11 species: Tassili n'Ajjer Desert has 8 and Aurès Mountains 8. No single area has them all: 3 only in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert and 3 only in Aurès Mountains.
- Night only: Beaver, Gray Wolf, Jackal, Striped Hyena and Sasquatch. Plan a drive after 20:00, or camp to skip ahead, if you are missing them.
- Also in wet weather: Elk, Mule Deer, Beaver, Gray Wolf and Moose. In fog or rain they are the only animals that spawn, so a wet spell is a good moment to look for them.
- Legendary: Saharan Cheetah and Sasquatch. Each has a single spawn point in the whole game, so open its area link in the table to see exactly where to wait.
- Every spawn point stays in the same place each session, so once you know where an animal lives you can drive straight back for a better shot.

Common questions
How many animals are in over the hill?
27 you can photograph: 16 in Canada and 11 in Algeria. The legendary ones are the Saharan Cheetah and Sasquatch. More animals are in the files but do not spawn anywhere yet.
Do I get pebbles for every animal photo?
Only the first photo of each species pays, 720 pebbles across all of them. Later photos of the same species pay nothing.
When and where do animals appear?
Each animal has fixed spawn points and only appears when you drive near one. Day animals spawn from 05:00 to 20:00 game time, night animals from 20:00 to 05:00, and some need dry or wet weather. Habitat does not affect spawning.
Where can I find the legendary animals?
The Saharan Cheetah and Sasquatch have one spawn point each, listed in the table; each area link opens the map with only that animal shown.
Which over the hill wildlife only comes out at night?
The Beaver, Gray Wolf, Jackal, Sasquatch and Striped Hyena. They spawn from 20:00 to 05:00 game time; camping skips 12 hours if you arrive in daylight.
